London Assembly launch Underage drinking Study
UPFRONT, news, night online, COMMENTS
Londoners are to be quizzed on their experiences of young people's drinking habits in a study of the alcohol consumption habits of teenagers. According to the London Assembly, there is ‘no clear picture’ of underage drinking and research will help aid retailers and licensees get a better understanding young people’s attitudes to alcohol.
The survey, which is open to teenagers and adults, will question participants about the impact of alcohol, how it is obtained and who is consuming it.
They will be asked to explain:
Whether alcohol misuse by young people is a problem among their friends, family or community.
The impact of alcohol on their friends, family or community.
Why they think young people misuse alcohol.
Where they think young people drink.
How they believe young people gain access to alcohol.
How they think young Londoners can be urged to drink more sensibly.
Abuse of alcohol was "beginning to have serious repercussions on public health and young people's life prospects", said James Cleverly, who chairs the assembly's health and public services committee.
"It will continue to do so for future generations unless something is done to tackle the problem."
He also believed the number of young drinkers admitted to London hospitals last year (1,600) was "likely to be just the tip of the iceberg" and hoped a more accurate picture would be obtained from the research.
The study can be completed through the London Assembly's website and will remain open for submissions until 1 October.
