liverpool leisure and retail centre shapes up
upfront, news, NOVEMBER 2006, COMMENTS
Shops, hotels, bars and restaurants in Liverpool city centre are being urged to give their premises a makeover in a bid to put the city on the map as a retail and visitor destination.
The call comes from Liverpool City Central BID (Business Improvement District), and follows Liverpool City Council’s co-ordination of a £20 million investment in improving the look of the streets and roads immediately surrounding the prime pitch of the city centre as part of its City Centre Movement Strategy.
BID is working on behalf of local businesses to help existing leisure and retail brands compete with and benefit from the £900 million Grosvenor ‘Liverpool One’ scheme and the newly opened £75 million Met Quarter.
Carl Speight, General Manager of BID, explained: “If Liverpool’s retailers and leisure venues are to fully profit from the current growth and regeneration of the city centre, it is vital that they show their commitment to the city by investing in their own offer.
“With the new Met Quarter shopping centre and the Grosvenor Liverpool One scheme near completion, hundreds of new brands are coming to Liverpool, which will really raise the bar in terms of quality and consumer expectations.
“We have already seen the announcement by Land Securities of their plans for major refurbishment to both Clayton Square and St Johns Shopping Centres, and over the last year I have had discussions with retailers such as Boots, Clarks and Marks & Spencer and expect some exciting further announcements soon.
“We have a unique opportunity to create a truly memorable city centre that both local people and visitors will want to use again and again and the better the overall experience is the more this is likely to be the case. We want to see new shop fronts, internal re-fits and exciting new concepts being brought to Liverpool as the city builds on its reputation as an innovative and internationally important destination.”
Grosvenor’s ‘Liverpool One’ retail-led mixed use redevelopment of 42 acres in the heart of Liverpool city centre is fast taking shape, with John Lewis and Debenhams confirmed as anchor stores. Opening is planned for 2008, the year when Liverpool is European Capital of Culture.
