GATECRASHER ONE COLLAPSES
UPFRONT, news, June 2007, COMMENTS
Clubbing institution Gatecrasher has collapsed after a fire took hold of the venue on Monday 18 June. Emergency crews were called to the Gatecrasher One nightclub - formerly The Republic - in Eyre Street at around 5pm.
Two people were believed to be inside the building when the blaze took hold but escaped the premises unharmed after calling 999.
The Arundel Street end of the two-storey building later collapsed, narrowly missing firefighters.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said five crews - about 25 firefighters - were at the scene tackling the blaze at its height.
Simon Raine, Managing Director of Gatecrasher, said: “We will be moving forward to scope out how we put on our planned club nights in Sheffield during the summer. We will be looking to continue all Crasher and Hed Kandi nights planned in Sheffield during Summer 2007 at a venue to be confirmed.
“We will also be looking at how we rebuild the Gatecrasher One club, one of the cornerstones of the UK nightclub scene and our spiritual home, as quickly as possible. We want everyone to remember all those memorable nights at Gatecrasher One from down the years, safe in the knowledge that it will be back…bigger, brighter, louder and more brash.”
The collapse of Gatecrasher One has not altered Gatecrasher's plans to develop their Media unit in Nottingham. Media will be relaunched as Gatecrasher Nottingham on September 6.
