BEST BAR NONE UPDATE
UPFRONT, NEWS, APRIL 2007, COMMENTS
Arguably the country’s most ambitious Best Bar None scheme comes to the end of its launch period on 6 April. West Yorkshire Best Bar None is the only Best Bar None scheme in the country which aims to provide an incentive for owners to improve standards across an entire county. The scheme has been launched across the each of the five West Yorkshire Districts: Wakefield and District, Kirklees, Calderdale, and Bradford and District, with the last event taking place in Leeds on 26 March.
Last year 97 venues around the county applied for accreditation of which 79 were successful. This year venues can apply to be rated against other similar premises in their categories and ultimately be recognised as best in their area or even across the county.
This year’s scheme is supported by representatives from pubs, bars and clubs across the county, as well as West Yorkshire Police, the Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber, the British Beer and Pub Association and BEDA.
Supt Ian Whitehouse, Head of West Yorkshire Police’s Community Safety Department, said: “Best Bar None was introduced last year across West Yorkshire and was a real success. We hope to build on that success across the districts.”
Lee Le Clercq, Regional Secretary of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: “The BBPA is delighted to support best bar none which encourages all venues to ensure they are operating not just to the minimum standards laid down by the Licensing Act but to go that one step further and show that all procedures and practices are directed at responsible alcohol retailing.”
Licensed premises interested in joining the scheme should contact Project Officer Troy Daniels at West Yorkshire Police, PO Box 9, Laburnum Road, Wakefield or call 01924 292 909.
