BEST BAR NONE UPDATE

The Best Bar None Award Scheme was created and developed in Manchester by police officers Jan Brown and Steve Greenacre of the City Safe initiative before being rolled out across the country. Four years on, the scheme is firmly established and strongly supported by licencees in its hometown and the city’s fouth Best Bar None Awards, launched in September, are likely to be well subscribed. Adding extra appeal, this year’s Awards ceremony on 26 November will be held in Manchester’s first skyscraper, the Beetham Tower. Licensees interested in information on or in applying for the Awards should call 0161 856 3171 for details.

Hackney are also moving towards an awards ceremony, which is scheduled to be held on 2 November 2006 at the Association of Photographers Gallery, 81 Leonard St, EC2. Their scheme, run jointly by Hackney Council and Hackney Police, is open to licensed premises in the Shoreditch Special Policy Area (SPA) which was chosen for the introduction of this high-profile award scheme because of its vibrant night time economy and dense concentration of licensed premises. In future, organisers hope to extend Hackney Best Bar None across the whole borough.

The Nottingham Best Bar None Awards Scheme, launched back in March, has now concluded with the best operators in the business being recognised and rewarded for their endeavours. Of all cities to adopt the awards, Nottingham reported the highest number of entrants in year one.

Of the 49 venues that received accreditation this year only those that excelled were considered for the top honours of best in category. The winners were bluu (Radio Trent FM Listeners’ Award), New Foresters (Best Pub), Dogma (Best Bar) and Oceana (Best Club). A Special Achievement Award, sponsored by The Cornerhouse, went to Jo Leverton, GM of Hard Rock Café.
