Best Bar None Update
UPFRONT, NEWS, MARCH 2007, COMMENTS
Black ties and glittering frocks were out in force for Liverpool’s glittering Best Bar None Awards ceremony at the city centre’s Marriott Hotel on 15 February.
Best Bar None, run by Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, has been active in Liverpool since 2005. This year, a record number of premises applied for Best Bar None accreditation and were successful.
Forty nine premises who have been awarded accreditation were presented with their plaques on the night. The eye catching design of the accreditation plaque was created by local company Energywise and were made from recycled bottles.
Over 200 guests enjoyed a night of lavish entertainment.
Liverpool City Centre’s Pub Watch Manager Joe Curran, took the mantle of MC for the night and entertained guests with his patter before announcing the overall winners in all the categories.
Winners included The Welkin (Best Pub), Club Society (Best Club), The Walkabout (Best Bar) and Liverpool Students’ Union (Best Independent Premises). Runner-ups included O’Neills pub, Popworld club, Yates’s bar and The Roscoe Head.
The overall winner was Club Society, with an achievement award presented to Liverpool club scene stalwart Roy Adams, historically one of the city’s most influential operators.
Roy, who in his time was responsible for the launch of the Pyramid Club, Gatsby’s and the Revolution Club amongst many others, finished his career at the Cavern Club in its original premises on Matthew Street, where he was the venue’s last owner. Now 74, he has been retired for six years.
Robin McGrath, Best Bar None Coordinator commented: “It’s been a spectacular night; the project is growing from strength to strength. The scheme is a very positive move towards building a safer night time economy of Liverpool city centre.”
