BEST BAR NONE UPDATE
UPFRONT, NEWS, DECEMBER 2006, COMMENTS
Following a successful pilot in 2006, all licensees across the London Borough of Camden are being given the chance to enter the Best Bar None 2007 awards - the unique award scheme that gives licensees the chance to prove that they’re serious about working with others towards a safer community. The scheme was launched at an event at the White Hart pub in Drury Lane, Covent Garden on 22 November. Camden Council has set the scheme up together with the Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, Transport for London, the BII and BEDA in the hope that it will help make Camden a safer and more attractive place in which to live, work, and visit. Like all Best Bar None schemes, Camden’s awards have three categories: Best Bar, Best Pub and Best Nightclub and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in June 2007. Licensees can get an application pack by ringing 020 7974 2521 or emailing vien.lieu@camden.gov.uk. The closing date for applications is 5 February 2007 and entry is free.
In Newcastle, the application process for the city’s second Best Bar None scheme is drawing to a close. Last year 64 venues entered; this year organisers are hoping the number will almost double, with a new category (gay/lesbian venue) and new areas (Jesmond and Gosforth) becoming eligible for entry for the first time.
Inspections of premises will take place during January, with ‘Judgement Day’ - where the top five in each category are invited to give a presentation to a panel of judges - taking place soon afterwards. The awards ceremony will be held on 25 March at the Gosforth Park Marriott, in conjunction with Metro Radio, who will present an additional ‘listener’s award’ to the venue that receives the most public votes via their website in the weeks preceding the event.
