BEST BAR NONE UPDATE
UPFRONT, NEWS, NOVEMBER 2006, COMMENTS
At an awards ceremony held at the Brighton Hilton Metropole Hotel on 1 October, around 250 guests heard which of the city’s licensed premises was officially Best Bar None. Regent Inns Walkabout, on West Street, was declared the overall winner of the awards scheme after impressing the judges with its drink, drugs and crime prevention strategies. Other winners included Worlds End (Best Pub), The Marlborough (Best Lesbian, Bi or Transexual venue) and Marine Parade’s independent basement club Audio for Best Club. Speaking at the awards ceremony the Assistant Chief Constable of Sussex Police, Nigel Yeo, said: “The scheme is about improving standards and safety for staff and customers. Yes, problems and incidents may happen from time to time - their frequency affected by the venue’s location, its capacity, its opening hours and the customers it attracts. However, with good systems in place and good implementation and management of those systems, those incidents should be less problematic than they were and the numbers of them minimised.”
Doncaster has also recently adopted the Best Bar None awards scheme - making it the first town in South Yorkshire to opt in. An integral element in a two-year Doncaster Evening Economy Partnership project which aims to reduce alcohol related crime and harm, raise people’s perceptions of Doncaster and attract a more diverse customer base, the scheme is open to all city centre licensed venues. 120 people attended the scheme’s launch in September, and organisers report an excellent application return rate. Initial assessments will take place at the end of November, with final judging scheduled for December. The awards will be held in January - watch this space for more details.
