LEEDS SWEEPS THE BOARD AT THE BEDAS
UPFRONT, NEWS, OCTOBER 2006, COMMENTS
It was a particularly good year for Leeds at this year’s Smirnoff BEDA Awards, home of winning venues Oceana (UK Club), Oracle (UK Bar) and Mine (Student Union).
The fifteenth annual industry Oscars saw the usual 1,000 people descend on Birmingham on 24 September to celebrate the strong line up of clubs and bars that have emerged over the past 12 months. As well as Oceana, Oracle and Mine, the achievements of venues such as Digital Newcastle and The Jam House Edinburgh - as well as numerous regional winners - were also recognised in a sparkling ceremony hosted for the third time by Vernon Kaye.
Launched three years ago to recognise the good practice employed by many late night entertainment venues, the Smirnoff Shine Award for socially responsible operation was this year presented to Walkabout Bournemouth, which through its continuing hard work and commitment was judged the strongest entry, beating the biggest ever class of entrants to claim the statue.
Manager of the Year Bill Surtees (pictured) was the last to be presented with his award - reflecting the significance of this most coveted of titles. He was handed his trophy by BEDA Chairman Paul Kinsey in front of an audiences of industry peers. For a full report, see the November issue of NIGHT. Web:
