Liverpool Council trials Know Your Limits texting campaign

Anti-binge drinking messages are being sent to drinkers in Liverpool city centre via Bluetooth technology to their mobile phones.

The Know Your Limits initiative, trialled by Liverpool City Council's newly formed Alcohol and Tobacco Unitl, also includes the projection of hard hitting messages on to buildings near pubs and clubs in a bid to encourage people to drink sensibly.

The trial took place between 27-29 December 2008, with the special phone and film messages sent out each night at 2130 GMT.

Councillor Berni Turner said: "I'm delighted that we are one of the first authorities to use this modern technology to promote alcohol awareness and by providing people with practical advice and information we can hopefully reduce alcohol misuse and any alcohol-related accidents."

A good idea, really. Its nice to see they're attempting to bring a message to the people, rather than simply punishing them -after- they've gone beyond their limits. However, the following situation springs to mind:

21: 30 - 'Oh look, someone's sent me a text message telling me not to drink too much tonight! Good old government, taking care of me!'

22: 30 - 'Hey, you see that message earlier? Yeah, er... what did it say? 'Know your prohibits?' Yeah, sommat like that. Don't really remember.'

23: 30 - 'Hey guysh! I'm-a gonna try send a dirty text to the government number, hic!'

00: 30 - 'Er... anyone seen my phone?'

01: 30 - 'No dammit! I don't wanna go in the police car! He deserved it for hittin' me with that salad cream bottle! Nooooo!'

Point is this: Texting people in the early hours of the evening may be all well and good, but the message isn't really that powerful, especially considering that people will probably have started drinking before that anyway. It is a step in the right direction, but we've still got a long way to go.
