JD Wetherspoon introduces new pricing scheme

JD Wetherspoon will introduce today a new drinks pricing scheme that includes pints of beer for under a pound.

The pub group will sell pints of Green King IPA and bottles of San Miguel at 99p in some outlets in order to stimulate visitor numbers across its 713 units.

The new pricing strategy is designed to stall widespread industry decline and to encourage customers to continue to socialise during the traditional January lull. Recent industry figures indicate that pubs are closing at a rate of five a day.

However, health groups have voiced their concern at increased discounting. Alcohol Concern's Director of Policy Nicolay Sorensen said: 'Alcohol is 65% cheaper than it was in 1980. We have to curb these price promotions in order to limit the harms they're doing to our society.'
