Pitcher-perfect style returns to Nottingham
UPFRONT, news, night online, COMMENTS
Nottingham-based interior architects and designers Macaulay Sinclair have brought the city’s 322-year old former Unitarian Church right up to date with an impressive facelift of the city’s popular Pitcher & Piano site.
During an intense three week re-design, Macaulay Sinclair’s Mike Sinclair has used external backlighting to add new prominence to the P&P’s imposing stained glass windows and subtly illuminated the church arches to emphasize the building’s stunning architectural heritage.
Elsewhere, following a complete re-sanding of the site’s ground floor, Sinclair used a mixture of American black walnut panelling and new timber parquet. The Lace Market designer also employed claret leather fixed seating and mirrored back bars to deliver a space which harks back to its congregational history.
Sinclair explained: “I think this project is a perfect example of how investing in design can make real commercial and operational sense. In terms of food, drink and time that customers were spending in the space, it was underperforming. The P&P housed a seated drum which really dominated the site’s central space. It was above eye-line and broke up the room’s sense of cohesiveness. By removing this and creating a symmetrical raised area, it provided visual communication with the rest of the trading area, including the bar. This new arrangement also provides a real focal point for live music. The inclined mirrored back bar provides the customer with special awareness and emphasises product display. There are now lots of food cues including an impressive bespoke waiter station and new dining height chairs and tables set for service throughout the day. Finally, there was a problem with finding the restrooms so we sprayed the spiral staircase, previously coloured black and hidden away, a striking metallic gold.”
Pitcher & Piano Development Operations Manager Steve Spooner enthused: “Macaulay Sinclair have delivered a project on time, on budget and one in which all of the operational issues have been resolved with both tenacity and imagination. Thanks to Macaulay Sinclair, I think, in Nottingham, we now have one of the most exciting sites in the Pitcher & Piano portfolio and one of which the city can be rightly proud.”
