GAMBLING COMMISSION PUBLISHES RESPONSE TO CONSULTATION ON ADVERTISING
UPFRONT, news, night online, COMMENTS
The Gambling Commission, the Government body responsible for regulating the gambling industry, has published a response to its public consultation on gambling advertising, calling on operators to demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility in advertising and sponsorship.
In the response, the Gambling Commission welcomes a proposed code of practice from the gambling industry which will supplement new rules - governing the placement and content of adverts - published in March by the Committee for Advertising Practice (BCAP) and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP).
The new industry code of practice – which has not yet been published - will require that advertising across all media includes signposting to a public awareness website that will be launched later this year. The Commission expects operators to conform to the final code from 1 September 2007.
The Commission’s response to the consultation also encourages responsible sponsorship of sports events, requiring social responsibility messages to be included within promotional material at sports grounds.
Gambling Commission Chairman Peter Dean welcomed the outcome of the consultation:
“We welcome the industry code of practice which will supplement the CAP and BCAP codes of practice for the advertising and promotion of gambling. These three codes recognise the need to protect children and vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by advertisements that feature or promote gambling.
“The Commission will monitor the effectiveness of the industry code of practice in delivering socially responsible advertising.”
