Portman Group encourage 'irresponsible advertising' complaints
UPFRONT, news, night online, COMMENTS
Drinks industry body The Portman Group has launched a press campaign encouraging consumers to complain about irresponsible drinks promotions and marketing in the run-up to Christmas.
The adverts - featuring the headlines "Only 17 complaining days left until Christmas", "'Tis the season of goodwill. And possibly, complaints", and "All we want for Christmas are your complaints" - will be shown in the Guardian and the Times newspapers for a period of two weeks.
The ads are designed to publicly underscore the importance of self-regulation in tackling alcohol-related problems in the UK. Direct mail will also be sent to trading standards groups and police licensing officers.
David Poley, Portman Group Chief Executive, said:
“We want to be certain that all producers are meeting the Code’s high standards. Consumers can help us achieve our goal by complaining about any irresponsible marketing that has crept under our radar.”
Commenting on the campaign, Jack Law, Chief Executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland, said:
“Alcohol Focus Scotland welcomes this campaign to encourage people to complain about irresponsible alcohol marketing. It is completely unacceptable for alcohol to be promoted in a way which glamorises drinking, encourages excessive drinking, or appeals to young people.
“The two pronged approach, using a national press campaign along with targeting trading standards and police licensing officers, is applauded and reinforces all of the other work that is going on to promote the responsible consumption and sale of alcohol.”
