MARQUE AUDIO AT CLUB BAR AND DINING, SOHO
TECHNOLOGY, NEWS, NOVEMBER 2006, COMMENTS
Marquee Audio have carried out a discrete sound system installation for the new prestigious Club Bar and Dining, an upscale restaurant and bar in London’s Soho, on the site formerly occupied by The Sugar Club.
Situated in Warwick Street, the venue comprises an informal bar and dining room with 80 covers on the ground floor, and a downstairs cocktail lounge bar, with seating available for 100 people.
The operation is a joint venture between successful Soho operator Brenhan Magee, and entrepreneur and Crystal Palace FC chairman Simon Jordan. The restaurant serves a menu of modern European cuisine alongside a varied international wine list, while the bar boasts an extensive choice of champagnes and cocktails including the house special, The Clubtini.
Magee has worked with The Breakfast Group over the past 11 years and was instrumental in setting up bars and restaurants including Jerusalem (which opened exactly 10 years ago) and recently Salvador and Amanda.
Having been heavily involved with the Breakfast Group over the years, and worked on the sound system installation at Salvador & Amanda, Marquee Audio tendered successfully for the audio fit out. Here, their system had to blend invisibly into the interior scheme of leisure hospitality specialists Shaun Clarkson Design. Marquee Audio’s project manager Scott Wakelin therefore selected 14 of Tannoy’s CMS8 TDC recessed ceiling speakers, reinforced with three Tannoy VS10BP subs. The ceiling speakers offer excellent overall performance from an 8in point source, constant directivity Dual Concentric driver.
Tannoy’s Communications Manager Tim Lount noted that the discrete designs of the CMS8 TDC ceiling speakers are a key strength when installing sound systems that need to provide comprehensive audio coverate while integrating sympathetically with a venue’s design scheme.
Says Lount: “Architectural demands in which audio installations are required to be heard but not seen are now quite typical in the restaurant market especially, as is the demand for loudspeakers with more of a design style to add to the décor rather than detract from it in any way. Fortunately this is an area that Tannoy have been developing at pace for the last two or three years now.”
Reinforcing iPod driven background music, the CMS8 TDC’s, powered by Crown XLS amplification, are the mainstay of a four-zone system (divided front and back on both floors); Marquee Audio have programmed the EQ and routing parameters into a Soundweb Lite SW3088 DSP, offering local volume control via four SW9012 Soundweb remotes, positioned at the bars. In the downstairs cocktail bar the company has also provided a DJ plug-in point.
Shaun Clarkson's design features include exposed brick walls, mirrors, block wood tables with candelabra, banquette seating in the ground floor's dining area as well as high tables, stools, chairs and a long bar. Downstairs is more extravagant and loungy, with deep colours, wooden flooring, a fire place, armchairs and spot lighting.
