nightclub sound and light

It is NIGHT magazine’s experience that most nightclub operators are deeply passionate about their work, and nothing can be more frustrating when that same passion that drives them is lacking from their venue’s technological installers. This is one of the main reasons why so many operators have turned to Michael Jordan of Nightclub Sound and Light. With his own residency in one of the best Scottish clubs outside of Glasgow and Edinburgh, Jordan has always had an appreciation of the value of a sound and lighting install to a legendary night out. Jordan’s experience at the Ice Factory in Perth got him into the installation business for all the right reasons, he explains.
“I’m actually a DJ at the club and The Ice Factory is the reason I got started as a supplier years ago. I wanted to be able to service this venue,” he has said. “I kept the lighting going for ten years and now I’m one of the biggest dealers in Scotland.”
Now an experienced and accomplished specialist in professional audio, lighting and audiovisual, Nightclub Sound and Light have been active since 1998, cutting their installation teeth at the Lorenzo Marques in Dunfermline. The group have a wide Scottish following, but also have won international acclaim for their work at some of the most influential clubs in the world. At El Divino’s in Ibiza NSAL managed to create a vast lighting and sound show that delivered huge amounts of power without disturbing the ‘millionaire yachts’ at the nearby marina that surrounds El Divino. The club drew notable praise from top DJs playing through its NSAL-installed Mach speakers, including Todd Terry, Tony Humphries and Joey Negro.
The key to NSAL’s ability are their relationship with their manufacturing partners, says Jordan, relying on the quality of such established innovators as Martin Audio, Martin Professional, Tryka LED and Pulsar.
“In our audio we always look for clarity of sound, ease of installation of the speakers and level of support from our supplying manufacturers,” says Michael. “For lighting, I always look at the support we get and the warranty offered. Companies like Martin Professional offer a two year warranty on their lighting, as well as support and guidance on products and their applications, so we always know that our services guarantee value for the end customer. With the right kit, we always keep the basic three installation principles in mind: the overall show and atmosphere in the lighting, ease of service and maintenance of the Installed system, and the quality of the finished install, so no cables on show.”
Jordan’s skills as a sensitive and imaginative installer can be seen at the recently opened Roca Blu in Perth, a beautiful cavernous bar featuring exposed brickwork architecture uplit by a mixture of Tryka and Pulsar units, that change colour in unison with two cutting edge Philips Ambilight LCD screens. The vaults of the former wine bar have also been given a large scale installation of Mach Ci4s and CW112 Subwoofers powered by four Yamaha P5000s.
NSAL have also been a quality installer of the latest audio visual equipment, with a key installation at Dunfermline’s De Ja Vu restaurant and Sport Bar in 2005 securing a BEDA Award nomination. The twin venue offers daytime American diner and myriad of NSAL-installed plasmas screens and projection units, with a bank of 25” CRT video cubes arranged into a video wall above the venue’s main bar, and six 17” LCD TVs complimenting a series of five wall mounted 42” Plasmas providing content to individual tables. The venue also features a Sanyo PLC-SU31 AirClean Pro, which projects onto screens in each of the venue’s upper floors. The audio visual install is finished with a series of Martin Professional lighting units and Pulsar ChromaRange.
Jordan’s appetite for the cutting edge has lead NSAL back to the Ice Factory in 2006. Following a successful demonstration of the brand new Martin Pro RGB 1.6 Colour Laser, unleashed at last years PLASA show, Jordan fitted one of these killer units at the Perth nightclub through a Lightjockey. The laser is capable of millions of high luminosity colours, and NSAL are currently one of the few qualified installers to be able to offer the kit.
