Nine winning bartenders from across the nation’s best bars including Mahiki London, Lab London, Socio Rehab Manchester and Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh have won their place to represent the UK in the 5th annual 42 BELOW Cocktail World Cup grand final in Queenstown, New Zealand this September. The first ever regional finals of the 42 BELOW Cocktail World Cup were hosted in Scotland, London and Leeds this week by 42 BELOW Vodka 'Professor' Jacob Briars.
The regional heats each saw 15 bartenders battle it out in front of a panel of industry experts to win one of three places to represent their region. Contestants had seven minutes to create their own completely original cocktail and five minutes to complete the 42 BELOW Ready Steady Shake challenge, where they had to create a cocktail using a mystery box of exotic ingredients.
The 42 BELOW CWC regional finals continue around the globe this month with 'Vodka Professor' Jacob Briars jetting off to the USA, China, Australia and finally New Zealand to decide an eventual winner.
Winning teams will go on to compete in the biggest ever 42 BELOW 'Cocktail World Championship' taking place in Queenstown, New Zealand, September 9-13 where bartenders from 25 countries will compete for five days. This year sees the largest ever presence from the UK & USA with three teams competing from each nation.
New to 2008
This year each team must complete a series of knockout challenges to qualify for the grand final where only two thirds of the teams will get to compete. The first of the six challenges begins on the plane trip over and will be announced in early August to enable bartenders to prepare.
The week culminates in the grand final when bartenders are put through their paces by extrovert Vodka Professor Jacob Briars in front of an audience of thousands of spectators.
