26 June 2007: Last minute entry Leanne Davison of Lab Soho has beaten 14 of the country's leading male bartenders at the
first 42 BELOW Cocktail World Cup at Taste of London on Friday 22 June.
Despite torrential rain the 42 BELOW cocktail bar hosted 300 supporters who came to cheer on the bartenders from
celebrity hangouts, style bars and restaurant bars like Mahiki,
Loungelover, Soho House, Fifty, Lab and Harvey Nichols.
"Women are starting to make a big impact in the world of bartending,"
said judge Peter Dorelli. "Fifty percent of the
competitions I have judged over the past 12 months have been won by
girls. They have a professional attitude and are better at their
homework and preparation than the guys."
The competition was hosted by 42 BELOW's bartender Jacob Briars and judged by a panel of industry
experts that included Peter Dorelli, mixology author Ben Reid of iP
Bartenders, BBC mixologist Andy Pearson and extreme sports TV
presenter Izzie Knolles. All 16 bartenders were ranked on technique,
taste, scent and flair. Leanne inspired the judges with her witty
42-a-Day cocktail - finished with tobacco syrup - anticipating next month's
smoking ban. Her final score was a record 42.5 out of 50 points.
