SEE THE LIGHT AT THE ARC SHOW 2007

Flashy dancefloor fixtures may hog the headlines but the right architectural lights can really set a scene - whether brightening up your venue's exterior or deployed internally to make the most of a building's characteristics and design features. More and more operators are appreciating the role architectural lighting can play, with the boom in LED technology fueling that interest. Want to find out what all the fuss is about? Then head down to London in February - where The ARC Show organisers will be making their mark on the lighting industry and on the capital itself, as Mondo*ARC Editor Paul James explains...

Taking place at Islington's Business Design Centre between 12 and 13 February 2007, The ARC Show looks set to build on its rapid growth in 2005 and 2006 to become the quintessential business event for the lighting industry in the UK, Europe and beyond. This year's show welcomes back many big name exhibitors as well as a large number of new exhibitors recently confirming their presence. New exhibitors for 2007 include e:cue Lighting Control, Francis Searchlights, Griven, Helvar, Huco, iLight, Intralux, Kim Lighting, Lightscape Projects, Lucent Lighting, Lumascape, Ornalux, Osram, Ridi Lighting, Roblon Fibre Optics, Tecnolight, Tokistar Lighting Systems, Traxon and Wila Lighting. These join a host of great companies exhibiting at The ARC Show including ACDC Lighting Systems, Anolis, Artistic Licence, Atwork Associates, Color Kinetics, Crescent Lighting, Danlers, Designed Architectural Lighting, Dynalite, ETAP Lighting, Inspired By Design, Insta, Lee Filters, Martin Architectural, Microlights, Mike Stoane Lighting, NJO Technology, Oktalite Lighting Technology, Philips, PJR Engineering, Roscolab, Sill Lighting, Solar GB, The Light Projects Group, TMB, Tridonic ATCO, Trilux Lighting and Tryka LED.

In fact, approximately 100 companies shall be exhibiting representing a 30% increase on 2006. Most, if not all of these companies, have had experience of applying architectural lighting principles to entertainment and retail venues, whether it be clubs, bars, restaurants, hotels or stores. As you will know, this trend is gathering pace with LEDs in particular leading the way in lighting design for entertainment venues and beyond.

Building on the strength and quality of the visitors to ARC 05 and ARC 06, The Arc Show has developed its conference programme further by welcoming an exciting partnership with the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The 'Sustainable Lighting Design Education' conference will be promoting the practice of responsible lighting design from some of the world's leading lighting designers. Topics include 'An incredible year for LEDs - the future is bright' by LED afficionado Dr Geoff Archenhold of the Government’s Photonic Leadership Group; ‘Strategic Lighting Design’ by Rogier Van Der Heide, Global Leader of Arup Lighting; and ‘Lighting the Exteriors of Historic Buildings and Environments’ by Mark Sutton Vane, Principal of Sutton Vane Associates. There will also be a number of free seminars by exhibitors including ‘Embracing LED Technology’ by Mike Simpson of Philips Lighting; ‘Using Entertainment Technology in Architectural Lighting’ by Sam Woodward of Mode Lighting; and ‘Lighting Control Protocols – DMX, DALI and Ethernet’ by Wayne Howell of Artistic Licence.

Another exciting development is ‘Switched on London’, a lighting festival taking place in the Pool of London between Tower Bridge and London Bridge from 8 – 16 February. Every evening, from 4pm, iconic landmarks will be lit by some of the UK’s best lighting designers and manufacturers. The festival is organised by Mondiale Publishing in association with the IALD and will include venues such as the Tower of London, London Bridge, HMS Belfast and Hays Wharf. Lighting design firms involved include BDP Lighting, NDYLight, Campbell Design and Jason Bruges Studio. Manufacturers include ERCO, Martin Architectural, Traxon, Philips Lighting, Lee Filters, Sill Lighting, Zumtobel and White Light.
