Prolight + Sound Director Jürgen Kupczik gives NIGHT readers the low down on the leading trade fair for the AV industry

This year’s international Prolight + Sound trade fair is distinguished by new features. We have re-arranged the location of many product groups in the exhibition halls and added some new lecture events. The light segment this year will be found in two adjacent halls: Hall 8.0 for festival lighting and in Hall 9.0 theatre, studio and stage lighting. Once again, the fair has expanded its exhibition space. We also expect to beat last year’s figure of approximately 25,000 trade visitors. However, these changes concern not only the location of the individual segments: there will also be many completely new features at this year’s fair. For the first time at Prolight + Sound, with Pro Stage, there will be a live stage on an outdoor area where all aspects of a big festival stage can be demonstrated under realistic conditions. The stage measures 35 x 16 metres and will be supplemented by a seminar programme covering all subjects relating to live stage construction. Also new this year is the Prolight + Sound Video Studio where experts from the AV industry, as well as musicians and bands, can discover everything worth knowing about video production.

Other highlights this year include the presentation of the OPUS and SINUS awards. With Opus (German Stage Prize), which has been given annually on the occasion of Prolight + Sound since 2002, a jury of experts, journalists and association representatives honours creative achievements in the use of technology for stage productions. SINUS (Systems Integration Award) is presented for technical and creative achievements in the fields of media technology and system integration and aims to draw the attention of a larger audience to these still relatively unknown but important fields.

As a special treat for visitors and exhibitors, we are also holding an exhibition of over-sized photographs by concert and event photographer Ralph Larmann. Many manufacturers will recall the individual events and concerts because they were also involved in them.

Offering lectures and seminars especially for planners, system integrators and architects, the three-day Prolight + Sound Media Systems Congress will be held for the seventh time at this year’s Prolight + Sound. With around 35 lectures, the congress is the biggest lecture event at the fair and has developed into a must for visitors. On the product side, the new LED technology and new video panels are, as in the past, certain to generate new impulses and numerous synergetic effects, especially in connection with the digital-signage segment.

Last year, around 25,000 visitors came to Frankfurt for Prolight + Sound. The high level of internationality on both the visitor and exhibitor sides speaks for itself. In 2006, we welcomed 781 exhibitors from 42 countries. In addition to the comprehensive overview of all parts of the audiovisual sector, Prolight + Sound also offers a variety of training events for exhibitors, users and trade visitors.
